Communication

Communication, as trivial as it may seem, is of high importance in any workplace. It is so important that it can either destroy an entire company or move the company forward.

Effective communication is a skill that everyone should acquire. It is necessary for our day to day interactions whether in the professional space or non-professional space.

In this article, we would be looking at the four major types of communication and how you can leverage them.

1. Verbal Communication

The use of language to convey information through speech or sign language is known as verbal communication. Verbal communication is commonly used during presentations, video conferences, phone calls, meetings, and one-on-one talks.

Here are some suggestions for improving your verbal communication skills:

Project your voice. Be confident and ensure you project your voice well so that you can easily be heard. The way you speak sometimes matters the way you would be addressed.

Use active listening. The other side of using verbal communication is intently listening to and hearing others.

Avoid filler words. These are also known as verbal viruses.

2. Nonverbal Communication

The use of body language, gestures, and facial expressions to convey information is known as nonverbal communication. It can be employed both consciously and unconsciously. When you hear a pleasant piece of information, for example, you may smile unintentionally.

Here are some suggestions for improving your nonverbal communication skills:

Self-awareness. When you experience a range of emotions try to identify the origin of that emotion within your body. Being self-aware about your emotions gives you an edge especially during interviews or presentations. Read more on how you can be more self-aware as a young professional.

This is your body language when you speak with people. Ensure to use the right gesticulations when communicating verbally. It helps with the confidence and persuasiveness of your audience.

Improve your non-verbal communication skills. Pay attention to non-verbal skills that you emulate and learn how and know when to use them effectively. If you see that nodding your head effectively communicates approval and good feedback, use it in your next meeting when you feel the same way.

3. Visual Communication

The use of images, charts, and graphs to convey information is known as visual communication.  Visual communication is effective for learning. People often remember images faster than written or verbal communication. It also helps to provide context during a presentation.

Here are some things you can do to improve your visual communication abilities:

Know your audience. The kind of audience you have determines the kind of visuals you would use. Ensure you use visuals that can be easily understood by your audience irrespective of their age.

4. Written Communication

Written communication is the act of conveying information in written texts. It is beneficial since it keeps track of information for future reference. In the professional setting, emails and chats are examples of written communication.

Here are some suggestions for improving your written communication skills:

Keep it simple. Keep your writings as simple and clear as possible.

Read books. This helps to improve your vocabulary.

Proofread and Edit your text. Setting time aside to re-read your written texts can help you spot errors or innovative ways to convey the message you want to pass across. A good tool to use is Grammarly, which has different integrations with Word, Chrome and more!

Final Thoughts

Set personal goals to work on the areas you want to improve on to enhance your communication skills. Ensure you stick with these goals and be consistent till you see desired results. You can ask friends, family, and coworkers to help you out on this journey.
